Welcome to our website and thank you for taking the time to visit.

We have done something pretty amazing!  In the middle of October 2010, the herd was moved to the Makai Wildlife Sanctuary***.  The sanctuary is nestled in a beautiful coastal setting, just on the outskirts of the town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  The herd of six presently have seven acres to roam and we hope sometime in 2011 to have the entire 72 acres fenced, which includes a 25 acre island connected by a stone causeway.  The property also includes Fir Trees, Wax Myrtle, coastal grasses, ferns, and moss covered boulders.  The terrain is hilly which is excellent to keep their hooves naturally groomed.  The property is shared by other wildlife such as "super-sized" deer, quail, pheasant, blue jays and many other wildlife.  Just the other night we heard the call of the wild coyote.  To us, we respect all wildlife and they will be protected here.

The horses are extremely content and when they were released in October you could see and feel their excitement.  They shared neighs, rolled in the soft grasses of the hilltops and ran the "victory run" of their fenced area.  They also ran in opposite directions of each other and met in the middle only to buck, rear up, and kick out in excitement.  This wasn't simply moving them to another location.  This is the first time in five years that they have been to live on the coast and to see it once again.  I cried at their happiness, the joy I felt in those moments that their journey was complete, those five years of searching for the right home was over.  Now my husband and I can enjoy their presence and enhance their lives by giving them the freedom they were born with.

If you would like to contribute and help cover the costs of hay, fencing material and shelter.  Please select the donate button below.  You can donate as little as $1.00 (if we had 6 people donate $1 each, it pays for one bale of hay).  We also welcome anyone who would like to volunteer once we have enough funds to start the large scale fencing.  As the sanctuary grows, and the needs of other wildlife or horses arise, we will welcome regular volunteers who love working with wildlife (volunteers will need to sign a waiver form).

Through Paypal, you can donate any amount.  Please keep in mind that they charge 1.5% for US and Canada and an additional 1% to other countries.  This will come out of the initial donation.  If you would prefer to purchase materials direct through the local Co-op, we have made arrangements with Ocean Breeze Farm Supply.  their contact information is as follows:
Ocean Breeze Farm Supply, (902) 742-3530 and their address is 290 Overton Road, Overton Nova Scotia.  If you would like to email them direct, you can email Gary, the owner at oceanbreezefarm@eastlink.ca

Items that we need right now:

  • Bales of hay* for the winter $5.50 each (we need two per day), 240 bales of hay takes the herd through winter from January to the beginning of May costing $1,320.    Please only contribute what you can.  We do not want anyone to feel obligated in any way at all.  An example of a small contribution making a huge difference:  If the horses had 1,320 facebook fans and each fan contributed $1.00, this would add up to what was needed to bring them through the winter.
  • Fence posts, electrical tape and mounting clips
  • lumber for run-in shelters.

***For the time being, we cannot call their new home a sanctuary until we purchase the property and register with the municipality.  However, we can certainly share with everyone what our plans are and share in their great adventures.

We created a "facebook" page just for the horses.  I need to find the facebook link page.  there you can read frequent updates and share in our stories of funny and amazing things they get up to during the week.

For those who have been patiently awaiting items sold through this website to benefit the horses, we would like to ask you to be patient just a little longer.  The most time consuming part of creating a store is in protecting the items being sold.  We have a huge library of photography to sell.  Each one of those files has to be protected with a Watermark and has been very tedious to complete.  Rather than post a store with just a few items, we would like to offer a wider range.

Please keep in mind when the store is functional that proceeds from the sales (less material expenses) on this website will go toward the care of the herd.  We will research creating a charity so that donations can become tax deductible but for now "For The Horses, LLC" was set up with a US Taxpayer ID years ago, while we were in the US and we will need to change the documents to Canadian.  We are holding off until we purchase the farm to make the change over.

We will be adding products for horses, and pets in general.  For now, when the store is functional , we will  sell items that we continue to stock.   One other item we will be including is an area for pet owners to share tips and advice.  We will have to post the obvious notes about consulting a professional vet but will have many suggestions of our own that have helped our pets and the wild horses in general.  Some of those solutions will include organic foods and natural health care.

Items that will be offered through our Online Store:

Photography - prints and downloads of:  Wild horse beach scenes, Bird Scenes, Seascapes, Deer, Fox, Sea Mammals, sunrises and sunsets, weather images, fish, boats, lighthouses, places of interest, out of state and Canada and reference photos (animals, mammals, birds and plants and other objects for download).

Other items that will be offered:  Benches (custom with or without engraving), tables, coffee tables with resin and seashell or photos below resin.  Can also do rope knots.  Window seats - our product line customized to your taste.  Children's heirloom toy chests, wooden games and toys.

We will also be offering items for your horses and pets.  Please check back often.
